Two separate inspirations combined to fuel this piece: first, of course, was that striking pattern of leaf and snow clump. The second came to me while running on a late winter afternoon, as the sky began to clear following a snowstorm that day. I was struck by the comparative darkness of the snow compared to the western clearing sky, which is the inverse of how we usually picture snow and sky.
